I’m a little overdue with this post, but now that seminar is over I finally have time to sit down and write this. I’ve really been trying to come up with some good goals for this year because 2012 is going to be a big year for me. Also, for once in my life, not all of them are related to dieting/weight loss. Sure, I still want to lose some weight, but there’s more to life than just that and when you’re trying to maintain a balanced lifestyle, I think it’s important to remember that.
On that note, here are some of the things I hope to accomplish in the next 12 months.
1. Graduate pharmacy school
I’m currently in my sixth year of college (and fourth year of pharmacy school) and let me just say that I am ready to be DONE. It’s been a long six years and I have never worked at harder for anything in my life. After three years full of late nights of studying, four months of rotations, and the biggest presentation of my academic career, there’s only four months standing between me and getting my Doctor of Pharmacy degree. I’m counting down the days!
2. Pass the NAPLEX and the MPJE
In other words, pass the boards! Graduating with a pharmacy degree will be useless until I get licensed, and to do that I have to register for and pass the NAPLEX (North American Pharmacist Licensure Examination) and the MPJE (Multistate Pharmacy Jurisprudence Examination). I plan on taking both of these either towards the end of May or sometime in June.
3. Become more independent
I’m very fortunate to have a job already lined up for me when I graduate (I’ll be staying with the same company I currently work for, and if all goes according to plan I’ll have a position in Traverse City!). While I’m extremely grateful for all of my parent’s help over the past six years, I cannot wait to finally have my own income and support myself. I always feel incredibly guilty for having to be so dependent on my parents for money, so it will be nice to finally have a “real” job and pay for my own bills.
4. Focus more on the healthy lifestyle, and less on the weight loss
Okay, I know I have to elaborate on this. As I mentioned before, I do still want to lose more weight (around 30 pounds, to be more specific). However, after “trying” for a large majority of the year last year and ending 2011 ten pounds heavier than I was when the year started, I’ve come to the conclusion that I have a long way to go with this whole “lifestyle” thing. I feel like it’s either all or nothing for me, and I still struggle enormously with self control and moderation.
This year, I want to really focus on making more healthy choices on a daily basis, regardless of whether or not I’m trying to lose weight. I need to cut down on the fatty foods (particularly when I go out to eat) and the sweets, and increase the protein and veggies.
While I currently have not made more specific weight loss goals set for the year yet, my goal weight is 150 pounds. I have been weighing myself every day and tracking it in a calendar, and I haven’t been letting the daily fluctuations affect how I’ve been eating too much. I’ll share more about that later, but the first week into the new year I dropped about 2.5 pounds, only for it to creep back on (and apparently stay on?) over a weekend of what I considered to be still “on track.” Like I said, I still have a long way to go.
I’m hoping that if I can transition into a more overall healthy way of eating (less of this all or nothing stuff), then weight loss will accompany it. Besides that, I just feel better when I’m eating healthy and exercising and I want to feel good all the time.
5. Grow the blog
Writing this blog brings me so much joy and happiness, and I hope to increase my readership even more this year. I feel like I am just now starting to develop my own “style,” even though I’ve had this blog for over a year. I tried my best to get a post up every day last year (even if it meant blogging on the road), but sometimes life got busy and the blog got put on the back burner. This year, not only am I going to try to update as frequently as I can, but I’m going to try to avoid “pointless” posts. These are the posts that come up when I have absolutely nothing write about, and simply post pictures of my food and call it a day. Boring!
Additionally, I want to become more active in the blog world this year. I read a lot of blogs, but hardly ever comment because I usually just read them from my Google Reader on my phone and am too lazy to try to post comments from it. I know that many of you write some pretty amazing blogs and this year it is my goal to check them all out!
So, there ya have it. Five things I want to work on in the upcoming year. Now to wrap up the post, I want to offer a little somethin’ to one of you in hopes of making sure your year is off to the right start .
One lucky reader will receive this little goody package, compliments of yours truly.
It’s not much, but they’re all things I love.
