Ice Sculpting and Sushiya

Hello and happy Sunday!

Yesterday turned out to be a really fun day. Around 3:00 or so, I drove over to Holland to meet up with a friend and check out the ice sculpting contest that was taking place downtown.

Here’s a question: how does one get into ice sculpting? Better yet, how do you get good at it? Do they sell giant blocks of ice somewhere that I’ve never seen? On top of that, the weather has not been nearly cold enough (in my opinion) to keep the ice from melting, so where do you practice?

Surely I’m not the only one who wonders about these things…

All of the ice sculptures were beautiful, but these were a couple of my favorites:

And of course, the giant shoe:

In between sculpture viewing, we stopped at a coffee shop and chatted for a couple of hours. He recently graduated and is a pharmacist for the same company that I work for, so we had a lot to talk about. I’m trying to make the most of my time down here in Grand Rapids by hanging out with as many friends in the area as I can, especially since it won’t be long before I’m back in Traverse City!

Speaking of hanging out with friends, after I was done in Holland I drove over to Melissa’s to pay her a little visit. We were both hungry and in the mood for sushi, so off we went! She told me about a great place in Kalamazoo called Sushiya, and it was fabulous.

We started with a plate of Ika Ika Yaki, which was calamari with a citrus shiso guacamole:

And the three of us split these three huge rolls for our main course:

(I left my memory card at home so these are all phone pics; I apologize for the poor quality)

From left to right we have a Spider Roll, Dragon Roll, and a Sushiya Roll. I couldn’t find a complete menu online that included descriptions, but they were all delicious. We cleaned the plate and left with full bellies.

Five stars for Sushiya!

(The pen had a rose at the end, hence the pen comment Winking smile)

After dinner we went back to Melissa’s house and spent the evening watching wedding entrance videos (seriously, have you seen this one or this one? So cool!) and goofing around with her fiancĂ©.

By goofing around, I mean throwing goldfish at Nick’s face.

I’m thinking that trips to their place may need to be a weekly occurrence Winking smile.

So far today, all I’ve done is lie around watching DVRed Criminal Minds. Oh, and I made breakfast.

Just an egg white, cheese, and jelly sandwich on an English muffin, plus two clementines.

I have a laundry list of things I want to get done today, but right now all I want to do is watch another episode of Criminal Minds. I think I’m entitled to a day of relaxation, right?

Catch ya later Smile
